With spring break coming up, we wanted to get away from our house. Over the past year, our house had become our office and our child’s remote school. A location that would we could drive to, would be able to social distance, and would be a comfortable spot to spend a few days. Our way of getting back to normalcy.

We selected Chincoteague Island with the plan to see the Assateague Wild Horses in Assateague National Seashore. We were able to reserve a camping cabin at the Chincoteague Kampgrounds of America (KOA). The camping cabin had two bedrooms, a full bathroom, a full kitchen, a living room/dining room combo, a screen porch, a charcoal grill, an outside table with chairs, and a fire ring. We opted to move the dining table to the screen porch to enjoy the warmer weather. This KOA has water slides and a pool, which were not open at the end of April, and a large inflatable jumping pad that the kids enjoyed during our stay. The KOA is close to Assateague National Seashore and the main street of Chincoteague Island. We ate our meals at the cabin and splurged for ice cream at Island Creamery.  I would recommend checking out this KOA.

The best way to see the Assateague Wild Horses is by boat or walking (~6 miles round trip) down the service road out to the beach. Alternatively, you can ride your bike for the first mile then walk the last 2 miles down the service road out to the beach. There are several options for a boat tour. We selected the Daisey Island Cruises and had a wonderful tour of Assateague National Seashore, and were able to see the Chincoteague ponies during the cruise.
